MyWorld, helping Myanmar grow through Education

Myanmar has started its political reforms from 2011 onwards and consequently, its economy and other sectors have gradually improved after decades of isolation and sanctions. Foreign companies have been continuously entering this niche market and it has been reported internationally that Myanmar has one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. More and more job opportunities have emerged for local people, however, there are still concerns because of the lack of skillful workers in the country and the opportunities for people from rural areas are questionable.

There are limitations in the infrastructure of a developing country and the gap between the population of rural and civilized areas is huge. In Myanmar with over half the population in rural areas, the country is essentially wasting it’s human capital resource. The reasons why people from the countryside are not getting a proper education is clear. In order to have sustainable growth of a nation, we also need to provide effective educational development programs to the rural areas of Myanmar so that they can be a part of the country’s development and their communities can prosper.

MyWorld Careers wanted to give the community support in rural areas especially in education sector as we strongly believe it plays an integral part in developing the country. So, we decided to build a school building at B.E.H.S Thayat Chaung, in Shan Su village through Magical Light Foundation. It took around 7 months to finish and last year members of our team went to the village after the construction with the purposes of meeting with the local community and getting to know more about the people’s real-life situations in that area which is approximately 5-hour drive from Yangon passing through Lat-Pa-Dan.

It actually took us nearly 6 hours; 5-hour drive to Hinthada and then a boat ride for nearly 45 minutes to Shan Su as the roads are constantly damaged by the heavy rain during rainy season. We arrived at the village in the afternoon and the children welcomed us with big smiles. The headmaster of the school explained to us how the people are depending on this High School as it is the only one in the area. He mentioned that the children are willing to study but he is saddened by the fact that the school can merely provide basic facilities. The reason is that it is hard to get to the place and only few people know that this area is in need.

  • With all of their continuous efforts, the school has been upgraded to a Basic Education High School in 2017. The school is the only High School in the district so the children from the neighboring villages also have to come to that school. There is a total of 50 teachers and 1300 students starting from kindergarten to grade 10. There are five buildings in the school compound and our building is located on the left side of the entrance. It is a single-storey building with a 30’x90’ area covering a total of 3 classrooms, and it is able to support around 40 students in each who are Grades 9 and 10.

Although there are a lot of transportation problems to get to the school and in need of some other facilities, the annual examination pass rate is almost 70%, and some students even got 2 and 3 distinctions in the matriculation exam. These kind of results are remarkable as the students have to take a matriculation exam in Thar Ra Wall which is about 7 or 8 miles away from Shan Su because B.E.H.S Thayat Chaung does not meet the criteria to hold the examination issued by Department of Education.

The children’s motivation and achievements make us proud and now we are able to give them an environment that helps them study and they are showing promising results. If we consider on a nationwide scale, there are so many people from the rural areas who are thirsty for proper education. It will make such a big difference to the country if we are all able to help those who are really in need and enthusiastic to improve their standard of living through education. We at MyWorld will always try to give help where we can, and we would like to encourage you all to contribute to local communities like this.
