MyWorld Careers wanted to give the community support in rural areas especially in the education sector as we strongly believe it plays an integral part in developing the country. So, we decided to build a school building at B.E.H.S Thayat Chaung, in Shan Su village through the Magical Light Foundation. It took around 7 months to finish and last year members of our team went to the village after the construction with the purposes of meeting with the local community and getting to know more about the people’s real-life situations in that area which is approximately a 5-hour drive from Yangon passing through Lat-Pa-Dan.

It actually took us nearly 6 hours; 5-hour drive to Hinthada and then a boat ride for nearly 45 minutes to Shan Su as the roads are constantly damaged by the heavy rain during the rainy season. We arrived at the village in the afternoon and the children welcomed us with big smiles. The headmaster of the school explained to us how the people are depending on this High School as it is the only one in the area. He mentioned that the children are willing to study but he is saddened by the fact that the school can merely provide basic facilities. The reason is that it is hard to get to the place and only few people know that this area is in need.

With all of their continuous efforts, the school has been upgraded to a Basic Education High School in 2017. The school is the only High School in the district so the children from the neighborhood villages also have to come to that school. There are a total of 50 teachers and 1300 students starting from kindergarten to grade 10. There are five buildings in the school compound and our building is located on the left side from the entrance. It is a single-storey building with a 30’x90’ area covering a total of 3 classrooms, and it is able to support around 40 students in each who are Grades 9 and 10.

Although there are a lot of transportation problems to get to the school and in need of some other facilities, the annual examination pass rate is almost 70%, and some students even got 2 and 3 distinctions in the matriculation exam. These kinds of results are remarkable as the students have to take a matriculation exam in Thar Ra Wall which is about 7 or 8 miles away from Shan Su because B.E.H.S Thayat Chaung does not meet the criteria to hold the examination issued by the Department of Education.

The children’s motivation and achievements make us proud and now we are able to give them an environment that helps them study and they are showing promising results. If we consider on a nationwide scale, there are so many people from the rural areas who are thirsty for proper education. It will make such a big difference to the country if we are all able to help those who are really in need and enthusiastic to improve their standard of living through education. We at MyWorld will always try to give help where we can, and we would like to encourage you all to contribute to local communities like this.
